The Process of Getting an Inlay or Onlay

As a lab-made ceramic filling, inlays and onlays provide more protection than conventional dental fillings. First, we prepare the tooth by removing any damaged, cracked or decayed structures. Then we use a digital scan or mould to create a precision fit to that tooth. From there, the custom ceramic filling is crafted and we chemically bond it to the tooth for an extremely tight seal and hold.

Advantages of Inlays and Onlays

The most notable benefits of inlays and onlays is that they protect teeth that are too damaged to repair with smaller fillings. As lab-made ceramic restorations, these treatments blend durability with aesthetics. At the same time, they are more conservative than full crowns, so less tooth alteration is required.

Inlay and Onlay FAQ

When do I need an inlay or onlay?

If you have a tooth that is significantly decayed or cracked but does not need a crown, inlays and onlays provide more protection than much smaller fillings.

How long do inlays or onlays last?

Each tooth is different, but most ceramic fillings (inlays and onlays) last much longer than a traditional resin filling. The better you look after your restoration, the longer we can expect it to last. However, inlays and onlays typically do not last as long as full crowns.
